Development of Novel Fluorene-based Polymers Directed Toward Optical Application

Polymers containing fluorene skeletons, especially those possessing diaryl substituents at the bridge (C-9) position which are recognized as the cardo structure, have attracted considerable interest owing to their high solubility in addition to high thermal stability. The cardo skeleton consisting of such fluorene moiety in polymer main chain is also expected to contribute to a variety of good properties such as high refractive index, low birefringence, and high affinity toward fillers enabling fine dispersion of them in composite materials. From viewpoints of importance of such polymers containing the 9,9-diarylfluorene skeletons, monomers and polymers possessing the fluorene skeletons have been reported. We have recently reported the synthesis of 9,9-diarylfluorene-based poly(arylene ether ketone)s,poly(arylene thioether)s, and poly(arylene sulfone)s showing high refractive index and low birefringence, in addition to a silicon-containing monomer 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenl)fluorene and dibenzofluorene-based dihydroxy and diamino monomers.Furthermore,we have found the free dispersion of carbon fillers such as carbon black and nanotube in 9,9-diarylfluorene-based polyester and epoxy resins.
