Three-dimensional conjugated polymers as efficient light-emitting materials

Most conjugated oligomers and polymers are rod-like molecules, which are prone to aggregate and end up self-quenching their luminescence in solid state. In order to reduce the aggregation of the rod-like conjugated polymers chains, we have designed and synthesized a series of three-dimensional conjugated molecules. Their electro-optic properties were also investigated. For example, random hyperbranched polymers containing 9,9-dioctylfluoren-2,7-diyl units were prepared by an one-pot AB2 + AB approach. These blue light emitting hyperbranched polymers can form good quality amorphous films and exhibit very good luminescent stabilities. No green-blue band emission was observed in their photoluminescent spectra even after the films were annealed at 200 ℃ for 30 min in air. Using a device configuration of ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Ca, a luminance of more than 3000 cd/m2 and an external quantum efficient yield of 2.46% were obtained for the hyperbranched polymers.Compared with the linear polyfluorenes, significant improvement has been achieved.
