Functional Materials Based on Nanofibrillar Constructs:From Multilevel Hierarchical Self-Assembly due to Discotic and Calamitic Motifs to Cellulose Nanofibrillar Aerogels

Previously it has been demonstrated that complexation of block copolymers and surfactants leads to two-level hierarchical self-assemblies and functional matter.Such concepts can allow supramolecular fibrils that can be conformally coated with inorganic oxides using atomic layer deposition (ALD) to allow new functionalities.Recently we have extended to polypeptides and to multiple length scale hierarchies. Here we use polylysine-block-polybenzglutamate-block-polylysine, which is a coil-rod-coil triblock copolypeptide with cationic endblocks, where anionic 2-deoxyguanosine 5-monophosphate molecules are ionically complexed with the lysine residues,The interplay of the discotic guanine -quartets, calamitic polybenzglutamate, and block copolypeptide microphase separation is relevant for the six-level hierarchy. As a final example of the power of supramolecular nanoscale fibrils, we demonstrate that 20-30 nm native cellulose I fibrils with outstanding mechanical properties allow flexible aerogels and templates for functionalities.
