Black conjugated polymers for all-polymer solar cells

Since the discovery of photoinduced charge transfer in composites of conjugated polymers and C60,polymer solar cells (PSCs) have attracted considerable attention due to their potential for use in low-cost,light-weight, solution-processable,and flexible large-area panels.Fullerenes, particularly the solution-processable derivative known as PCBM, are commonly used acceptors due to their good electron-accepting and electron-transporting properties; however, PCBM has only weak absorption in the visible and near-IR. Use of acceptor polymers with improved light absorption in PSCs has met with limited success. Here we report the synthesis and application in all-polymer PSCs of solution-processable conjugated polymer acceptors based on alternating perylene diimide and dithienothiophene units which exhibit high electron mobility (> 0.01 cm2V-1s-1), excellent thermal stability (Td > 400 ℃, Tg > 200 ℃), high electron affinity (> 3.8 eV), and which appear almost black due to strong absorption throughout the visible and extending into the near-IR. We used these polymers as electron acceptors and di or tri(thienylenevinylene)-substituted polythiophene as electron donors, and fabricated all-polymer PSCs. The power conversion efficiency of the PSCs is as high as 1.48% under illumination of AM1.5, 100 mW/cm2, among the highest achieved to date in all-polymer blend PSCs.
