Synthesis of Novel Hyperbranched Polyimides from 2,6,12-Triaminotriptycene

The monomer 2,6,12-triaminotriptycene (TATP) was readily synthesized from triptycene by nitration reaction and separation on silica gel, followed by reduction by Pd/C and hydrazine in ethanol. By A2+B3 method for hyperbranched polyimide (HPIs) reported by Fang, reaction of 2,2-bis 4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) phenyl propane dianhydride (BPADA) with TATP in adverse monomer addition order, with different monomer ratios and various terminal modifiers, two serials of HPI with triptycene structure were produced without gelation. In the preparation of HPIs, slow addition rate (5 mL/h) and intense stirring were employed to keep lowest local concentration in reaction system. As shown in Scheme 1, during poly (amic acid) stage, different reagents were introduced to react with terminal anhydride or amino of hyperbranched poly(amie acid)s, followed by imidization to get polyimides with designed terminal groups.
