Well-Defined (N-Hydroxysuccinimide Methacrylate)-Based Polymeric Materials and Nanoparticles.

A vastly improved polymerization ofN-hydroxysuccinimide methacrylate (MASI) via ATRP is described.Very well-controlled ATRP of MASI is achieved with a combination of a Schiff base ligand N-benzyl-2-pyridylmethanimine (NBPM) and CuCI as catalyst. Although the ATRP of MASI has improved in recent years, yielding polymers of reasonably low PDi (1.15-1.18), the problems of low monomer%conversion and relatively poor first order kinetics remain. The present study using CuCl/NBPM (molar ratio 1:2) and ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (EBrIB) as initiator has overcome such shortcomings, presenting optimum conditions for the controlled polymerization of MASI. Poly(MASI) of low PDI (1.10) and high %conversion (90%) with molar masses up to 19,000 were obtained. Linear first-order kinetics up to 80% conversion was observed. The end group of the polymer remained active as demonstrated from the successful block copolymerization with 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) (Scheme 1).Poly(MASI-b-DMAEMA) is water soluble if the chain length of the MASI is relatively short. The block copolymer self-assembled into simple core-shell micelles where the MASI core could be immobilized via crosslinking, generating water-soluble nanoparticles.
