Porous Scaffolds of Biodegradable Polymers for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine
Biodegradable porous scaffolds are important for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to serve as templates to provide the regenerating tissues with initial mechanical strength and to guide the new tissue formation. The scaffolds should be biocompatible and biodegradable, allow cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation, and be highly porous, mechanically strong and processible into designed shapes. An assortment of scaffolds such as porous sponges, meshes, and fibers has been prepared from biodegradable synthetic and naturally derived polymers. However, precise control of their porous structures such as interconnectivity and open surface structure has been difficult. We developed a template method for the preparation of porous scaffolds to precisely control their porous structures by using biodegradable polymer skeleton and ice particulates as templates.
