DME CCCI COMBUSTION IN A DIESEL Engine

Taking advantage of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion and in-cylinderdirect injection combustion for an engine fueled with dimethyl ether(DME),a new concept combustionsystem,namely Compound Charge Compression Ignition(CCCI) combustion system by port aspiration anddirect injection of DME,is proposed.A diesel engine was modified to realize this combustion mode.Combustion and emissions characteristics were investigated under different premixed fuel ratios and fueldelivery advance angles.The experimental results show that CCCI combustion process comprises HCCIcombustion,pre-mixing combustion and diffusion combustion.The combustion characteristics mainlydepend on premixed fuel ratio.With the increase of premixed fuel ratio,at 0.12MPa brake mean effectivepressure(BMEP),the combustion varies from two stages to three stages,to four stages,later to three stagesand finally to two stages again.The peak of in-cylinder temperature and pressure decrease firstly andincrease later,while NOx emissions decrease monotonously.At 0.24 MPa BMEP,the peak of temperature,pressure,pressure rise rate and pressure rise acceleration as well as NOx emissions decrease firstly andincrease later.At 0.36 MPa BMEP,the peak Of temperature,pressure and N0x emissions increasemonotonously in the available range Of the premixed fuel ratio.As fuel delivery is advanced.CO and HCemissions decrease but N0x emissions increase;and the fuel consumption is lowered.Compared with HCCIcombustion mode,with a certain premixed fuel ratio and fuel delivery advance angle,CCCI combustion canextend the engine operating range with little change in N0x emissions and a considerable reduction in HCand CO emissions.
