Tundish Technology for Quality Improvements in Continuous Casting
Tundish plays a very important role in controlling the cast steel quality in a continuous casting process. The paper briefly describes the types of non-metallic inclusions (NMI) formed in steel. Proper functioning of tundish ensures that the new NMIs do not get generated or at least minimized during the melt transfer from ladle to tundish, during melt flow in tundish, and during the transfer from tundish to mold. Melt flow in tundish should be such that the inclusions carried over from ladle or generated in the tundish should be removed from the melt. The effects of the tundish size and flow control devices are described. The effect of calcium addition in tundish on quality of cast steel is briefly mentioned. Recycling of hot tundish has been quite successful in some steel companies in Japan. Hot tundish recycling operation is explained.
