Static Test Research of Square Concrete-Filled Stiffened Steel Tube Columns
Previous research showed that the confinement of the tube to the core concrete in square concrete-filled steel tubes (CFT) is non-uniform (stronger in corners and weaker in other parts) and generally lower than that of circular concrete-filled steel tubes. CFT columns with slenderer steel profiles in cross-section are prone to buckle locally before peak load, which further weakens the overall bearing capacity and ductility of the columns. In this paper,4 types of reinforcement or rib stiffeners of the tube were designed to postpone or,if possible,to restrain local buckling and enhance the confinement effect of the tube to the core concrete. A series of tests including 1 square concrete-filled steel tube specimen and 4 stiffened specimens with same dimensions under axial compressive load were conducted. Failure modes were recorded and analyzed. The influence of the stiffeners on the bearing capacity and ductility of the specimens was also studied in detail.
