Development of Smart Concrete Using the Smart Fuse Sensors
Concrete has been remarkably widespread in construction. Sensors have been used to add functional characteristics to concrete. Self-diagnosis smart concrete is also being developed.Developing these functional materials and structures would contribute to protect buildings and structures against to external factors brought by unusual weather, etc. The PZT sensor and OFS (Optical Fiber Sensor) are the ones out of various sensors for developing smart materials and structures. The PZT sensor is a good measure to analyze time difference and wave frequency by the oscillation of elastic wave and acoustic wave in the material and elements. The OFS is used to a specimen to measure the characteristic signals produced by the deformation of the sensor, which is the same as the deformation on the main material and elements produced by external force. However, the complexity of the damage signal measurement hinders to apply the smart material and structure to practical construction. Therefore, the development of self-diagnosis concrete using an electric fuse is pursued to develop a more simple method for damage detection. An electric fuse protects a circuit against over-current,which is the body of electric resistance itself. The damage of elements can be detected by measuring the resistance of electric wire within the fuse, when the external glass tube is fractured while cracks are developed in the concrete specimen. Therefore, the self-diagnosis system can be used in such a way that the extinguished LED will predict the damage when the electric wire is torn due to the broken glass tube. A fundamental case study is carried out to develop smart concrete which detect damages using simply measurements
