Research on The Educational Significance of The Design Review(DR) and Sendal Design League(SDL) Events

The Design Review (DR) is a national design event for extensive discussion on architecture and urban design topics. After a discussion among all participating students, critics and visitors, some of the presented projects are selected and the students then need to make a supplementary public presentation. All students studying in the field of architecture design, urban planning and landscape design at a university level or similar technical college level are allowed to send one of their student projects. The Design Review (DR) has started in the year 1996. The Sendal Design League (SDL) is a similar design event in which only last year students can present their graduation project. The best graduation project will be selected by a jury as the number one of Japan, or the so-called “The Best of Japanese Architectural Diploma Project. The Sendai Design League (SDL) has started in the year 2003. In this research,a comparison study has been made between both the DR and the SDL events. In both events, the number of participating students did increase year after year. Recently, students all over Japan do have a great interested in participating in such kind of design event because of the public way of critique the project. Students do gather on site, and discuss among with other students about their projects, while being judged by some famous national and international critics and architects. These kinds of events have become an important element in the architectural education process.
