Strain Estimation of Un-bonded High-Strength Bar reinforced for RC Beams
There are several methods for strengthening reinforced concrete beams. These methods include use of steel plates, carbon fiber plates, and high-strength wires and bars. An advantage of strengthening by high-strength wires or bars is that the procedure is simple and can be completed with the building in use.Furthermore, the reinforcing performance of high-strength wires and bars is far superior to other strengthening methods. This paper discusses an analytical study for strengthening RC beams using high-strength bars. When a strengthened RC beam reaches the yield point, the rebars embedded in the RC beam reach their yield point, but the external high-strength bars may not reach their yield point. In general, the strain value of the externally reinforced rebar is less than that of the internally reinforced bar. This phenomenon must be considered in the design equation. If the external bar is yielded, the design equation becomes much simpler. If the pre-stress value is high, the external bar could be yielded by adding the stress due to the added load.In this study, the condition to induce the yield of external bar is shown based on the parametric study. The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data of the design equation considering the geometry of bars and initial stress.
