Creating and Sharing GIS based City Information for the Architectural Design Using a Virtual Globe

For architectural design, the location based information around the target building is needed by stakeholders. Even if the information is existed around us, to use it or them is hard because the information is not integrated in efficient way. This paper presents the methodology how to create and share city information based on virtual globe (e.g. Google Earth) for architectural design. In this research, the city information is build based on 1:1,000digital base map of south part of Seoul,Korea which has 2D shape of building, road, land segments, and information of some city infrastructure. The information is divided into separated information and then converted into GIS data. The GIS data is very usable to build up 3D building with location information (latitude and longitude as WGS84 geographic coordination system). The location information is employed to locate the buildings at the correct point on the virtual globe. In this research, Google Earth is used which is used widely worldwide as a virtual globe and a platform for sharing and browsing the city information. KML(Keyhole Makeup Language), geospatial data exchange standard format of OGC(Open Geospatial Consortium), is employed as the city information exchange format and it makes automatic update of the information with NetLink function. The city information can be used as the base data to review, use, and understand city by stakeholders of architecture design.
