The Foreign Pavilionsat the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art in Paris 1925

Through a study of the architectural design of foreign pavilions at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art in Paris 1925, the following points were clarified:The French pavilions were constructed at the Esplanade des Invalides, whereas the foreign pavilions were constructed at the Cours la Reine. The regulations established by the Exposition Committee controlled the outline of plans and elevations of the French pavilions at the Esplanade des Invalides. Therefore, almost all of the plans for the French pavilions such as the Pavilion des Magasins des Galeries Lafayette were designed in the shape of an octagon, the elevation was done with a setback, and the height was controlled. But the regulations did not control the foreign pavilions. Therefore, two tendencies appeared in the foreign pavilions. One was that some countries constructed a tower or high rise building on their pavilions, while other countries constructed a courtyard or forecourt within their pavilions. The pavilions along the avenue Alexandre III except for the Japanese pavilion had a tower or high rise building, and the pavilions in the Cours la Reine had a courtyard or forecourt.Consequently, the foreign pavilions at the Cours la Reine were not harmonized, but the French pavilions at the Esplanade des Invalides were, and the harmony was recognized as the Art Deco style.
