A Study on the Intermixing Styles of Korean and Western Architecture in Schools Built by Western Missionaries in Korea,1880~1950
The purpose of this study is to identify the intermixing styles of Korean and Western architecture in schools built by Western missionaries in Korea. These styles emerged during 1880-1950, a period of transition from Korean traditional architecture to Western architecture in Korea.This study mainly focused on the characteristics of the intermixed styles by extensively investigating and classifying the subject buildings. Also, this paper researched the relationship between transitional styles,and the relationship among structure,material, and appearance. Especially, the change of structure and material had a pivotal influence on the advent of various intermixing styles. Another feature that makes it possible to classify these styles is roof shape.
