A Research on Construction Activity and Technical Development of Yungsunsa,Architectural Organization of Royal Palace in Korea
This paper concentrates on Yungsunsa (Architectural organization of the royal palace, related to the royal family Yi since 1910), which was responsible for the architectural development of the Korean palaces. In the year 1908, the Yungsunsa positively adapted and implied new technology to the renovation of Changdeokgungs Injeongjeon. The implementation of the new technology:concrete, iron fittings and western truss systems in the construction of traditional wooden structures enabled a new stability in the structure and foundation, as well as column-less wide spanned spaces. As the new technologies made way for more light structures (especially for the roof),open spaces under the floor and above the ceiling made space for the installation of heating systems and lighting. The change in construction technology of the palace was found in drawings dating to that time.Modern materials such as western style truss, concrete, bricks and western nails, etc.revealed changes in technology of traditional wooden buildings.
