A Study on Characteristics of Urban Kampung in‘Buffer Zone of Historical City of Malacca’,Malaysia
Urban conservation in Malaysia is presently centered on building and monument, bringing a lack on area conservation. The urban development has also affected the historical character of Malacca City, bringing more complexities of urban issues and practices. Despite a full attention on conservation practices in Core Zone, an unbalanced development is occurring in Buffer Zone areas, where the conservation guidelines are not strictly enforced. This study analyses the urban morphology of Malacca City and clarifies the urban issues focusing on the areas of Buffer Zone. Kampung Banda Kaba, has been chosen as a study field due to its historical background and survival as a Malay community area in the city. The aim of the study is to reveal its characteristics as an urban kampung in Malacca City, provide solutions for issues occurring in the surrounding area and bring out proposal for a better conservation guideline. Findings indicated that the colonial eras had brought a big transformation to Malacca in its urban morphology. Meanwhile, the history of Kampung Banda Kaba as a former settlement for Malay government workers, built during the Portuguese era is being revealed. However, some transformations and developments are indicated on the traditional long-roofed houses in their architectural style, spatial usage and structure.
