Soeseo as an Imitation of Ha-ang
In many extant traditional timber building of Korea, bracket units have ornament called soeseo that is a beak at the end of a projecting bracket arm. Ha-ang has been considered as conspicuous parts of bracket units placed in high class buildings of East Asian architecture, and soeseo is considered to originate as a kind of imitation of ha-ang. Though there is only one extant building that has ha-ang, there are evidences that show the historical existence of ha-ang structures in Korea and their relationship to their equivalents in China. Therefore, we can assume that soeseo reflect not only the shape but also the arrangement of ha-ang structures of Korea and xiaang and jiaang in China. The traces of their influence to soeseo could be kept in bracket units of the oldest extant buildings in Korea, mainly from late Goryeo and early Joseon period. We can also compare soeseo made in different period for revealing the modification of them related to the decline of the use of ha-ang.
