A Research on Image Evaluation of Architectural Shape Through theory in Kansei Engineering——Taking Restaurant Buildings of Wu-Quan Parkway in Taichung City as Example

The research is based on the theories drawn from Kansei engineering and to pursue the substantial image cognition and to measure evaluation of modern architectural form. Firstly, this issue discovers the definition of image-ability and its link to cognitive psychology. Secondly,based on literature review, this paper discusses that Kansei Engineering is a concept of translating customers feeling into concrete product parameters and also provides support for architectural design.And this research indicates that semantic differential technique (SD) is a tool for measuring the emotional contents of an image more objectively. It has become the foundations of Kansei Engineering in developing valid and reliable measurements of image. Thirdly, Semantic Differential Method is used to convey the conceptual images of restaurant buildings in Wu-Quan parkway in Taichung. According to principals of design form and morphology, 16 cases can be divided into three types: classical shape, modern shape, and mixture-compromise shape. The general and significant adjectives are: concise,orderly, grand, beautiful, newfangled, and individualized. According exploratory factor analysis, the prediction model validating of architecture facade image can be named:Metal Feeling, Physical Feeling, and Tendency value. In this result, three main factors attributed to Evaluation, Activity,and Potency, designated in semantic space on the Kansei Engineering literature.This result demonstrates that Semantic Differential method (S.D.) is applied to examine and compare the differences among image cognition possessing high reliability and high validity for architectural design creativity.
