Transformation of Cultural Seascape on Ha Long Bay,Vietnam

Appearance of aquaculture (fish farming) in fishing villages changed the cultural seascape on Ha Long Bay rapidly. This new industry was introduced to fishing village by the fishing people themselves.Coupled with the new industry, a new style of dwelling -floating house was introduced to the village. Floating houses replaced the traditional fishing boats gradually, reformed the space of fishing village, and brought a new lifestyle. This research investigates the transformation of cultural seascape on Ha Long Bay, focuses on the characteristics of floating houses, changes of dwelling space, and the lifestyle in the village. This paper also focuses on the will of village people to live on land, to imply the way of changes of fishing village in the future. With the changing of lifestyle from semi-nomadic to sedentary, the separation of place of work and inhabitation, low-density, single aged people houses appeared. The space and the society of fishing village are changing in a way so-called urbanizationin historical precedents.
