Changing Urban Regeneration Strategy in planning Korea
This paper examines the policy and impacts of revitalization schemes during the 1990s and 2000s, in the context of urban regeneration of the case study where the physical factors are related to socio-economic conflicts. It explores various dimensions of urban regeneration in Korea : the changing nature and attitudes towards urban regeneration, the players and methods of regeneration, and the means of evaluation its impact.Through a project Urban Innovation in the City of Daejeon which is a flagship study of this paper, it is revealed that cities have increasingly become a focus for creative action, and planning authorities are in the process of devising strategies for innovative development in urban areas. However, dissatisfaction with traditional approaches to planning policy making has led to the rise of interest in involving the commitment on innovative industries in the process of plan and policy formulation. The notions of sustainability are used to look at the effectiveness of this approach both in bringing about innovative industries, and as a comprehensive approach to policy making. In addition, this paper examines ways in which participatory planning and sustainability can be used to make city center more livable for city dwellers. Finally, some proposals from the evaluation of urban innovation are discussed as a partial fulfillment of the project mentioned above.
