Process and the Support Institutions for Housing Reconstruction in A Rural Village after the 2006 Central Java Earthquake
This study clarifies the housing reconstruction process in a rural village that suffered serious damage in the 2006 Central Java Earthquake. The area focused on in this study is Plembutan sub-village, Bantul district. We analyze the rebuilding process and the aid provided by houserebuilding support institutions; we display this information using a plot plan on the scale of 1:100,selecting 10 premises and 17 households as the typical samples. The main information obtained is as follows: (1) The reconstruction process is supported by community groups called POKMAS;every group consists of about 15 households and is based on the concept of gotong royong (mutual aid) supplemented by NGO funds or self-funding. (2) Initially, houses are not rebuilt as permanent houses but as timber buildings built using self-financing for immediate use; this is followed by confined masonry buildings built using POKMAS funds. (3) The layout of the rebuilt premises basically consists of a front garden and orchard trees (Pekerangan) in the back. Diverse buildings built by different funds were built to make a line on the premises.
