Alternatives to Gentrification:Land Readjustment Contributions to Exalt the Richness of the Poor
Historically, the term gentry from Old French genterie 1 referred to landed people usually associated with a certain social status. Urban gentrification however, is a contemporary term associated with a process of change in social network composition, demographics, land uses and build structure, along with a rapid increase in the neighborhood property price. While for some scholars gentrification may be linked positively with renovation and district improvement programs, this paper discusses the social consequences incurred when local communities are displaced. It proposes the application of Land Readjustment, as a way to avoid the replacement of lower-income residents in a neighborhood by higher-income residents. Specifically it presents the case of an alternative strategy applied by the local government of Medellin, Colombia, through the Habitat Consolidation Project. The paper includes some conclusions obtained from the Impact Assessment Study, where more than 150 families participated directly in individual interviews, revealing the importance of understanding local conditions and spatial relations of the inhabitants with their environment, concerns and future expectations. It is argued that an integral approach applied in one of the poorest areas of the country leads to positive environmental changes perception of security levels and encourages the social networks preservation.
