Development of New Cities and its Process in South Korea Capital Region

The purpose of the development of new cities in the South Korean capital region is to meet rising housing demand connected to population growth. These new cities are located variously within a 20-55 km radius of Seoul, and can be classified according to the development period in which they were constructed. Great difference and development can be seen through analysis of the nature of the capital regions new cities in terms of their development period.Initially, the new cities, through new city planning techniques, were developed through a varied land use plan which acts to allow the city to be one of self-support.In the second development period, the previous emphasis on supplying a large amount of common person-oriented small-scale apartments is dismissed in favor of increasing the number of high quality apartments designed to strengthen the economic power of the new city. Furthermore, the later new cities were developed in cooperation with local autonomous entities and groups, hence it became easier to reflect local characteristics and demands in planning. In conclusion, it could be argued that changes in the development processes of the capital region new cities serve to promote the dispersion of population from Seoul to outer areas.
