A Subjective Evaluation Experiment on LED Illumination Light Source by Color Temperature

The purpose of this study is to compare brightness and color rendering of LED luminaires with those of a daylight-color fluorescent lamp and analyze the result. This study also examined preference of the two different kinds in order to find the feasibility of the use of LED luminaires for interior lighting. This study was conducted based on three steps. First, scaled models whose conditions were controllable for experiments were set up. Second, experiments were conducted to evaluate brightness, color rendering and preference of each luminaires using the scaled models. Third, brightness and color rendering of LED and fluorescent were compared and analyzed based on the experiment results. The result showed that LED is judged to generate less discomfort glare since brightness of LED is lower than a daylight-color fluorescent lamp under the same Uluminance. In addition to this, LED received a close evaluation to a daylight-color fluorescent lamp in color rendering and a higher evaluation in preference. The result confirms that LED can be used for interior lighting replacing daylight color fluorescent lamps, and it can be utilized to create a lighting environment with the better quality.
