Evaluation on Thermal Environment in Welfare Facilities of Elderly during Winter Season

In Japan a large number of deaths from accidents at home have still been observed, and about two-thirds of the victims are elderly people. Among the causes of accidents, death by falling, and those are found in their toilet and aisle of their rooms in the winter seasons,it might be due to insufficient heating in the rooms. However, the survey on the thermal conditions in the rooms of the elder from the viewpoint of preventing accidents is limited in number. Hence, this survey is conducted to measure the thermal conditions of the welfare facilities of the elderly specially in the bedroom. The purpose of this study is to clarify the state of the thermal environment in the welfare facilities. In this paper, a facility where elderly people actually live in is selected as research objective; the thermo-humidity environment was measured in winter. In this study the following results were obtained, the thermal environment of each room is influenced by life style, individual variation and air-conditioning use. Moreover, the relative humidity environment is very low,and the thermal condition is too cool in many investigated rooms in this welfare facility. For the users live in the room more comfortably and healthily, it is very necessary to improve the conditions of thermal environment in weffare facility.
