A Facile Approach for the Preparation Various Cross-linked Sulfonated Polymer Membranes for Fuel Cell Application
A facile approach has been successfully developed for the preparation of various cross-linked sulfonated polymer membranes sulfonated polyimides (SPIs), sulfonated poly(sulfide suifone)s (SPSSFs),sulfonated poly(ether sulfones) (SPESs), suifonated polybenzimidazoles (SPBIs) and sulfonated polystyrenes)(SPSs) on the basis of phosphorus pentoxide-catalyzed condensation reaction between the suifonic acid groups and activated benzene rings in the polymer structures. The cross-linking density could be readily controlled by controlling the cross-linking conditions and/or the molar ratio of the sulfonate moieties to the activated benzene ring-containing moieties. The resulting cross-linked sulfonated polymer membranes generally displayed better mechanical properties, lower water uptake and methanol permeability, and higher water stability than the corresponding uncross-linked ones. The proton conductivities decreased to some extent depending on the cross-linking densities.
