DESIGN OF A TWO STAGE MAGNETIC PULSE COMPRESSION SYSTEM
A magnetic pulse compression topology is presented which does not contain external remagnetization circuits that are commonly used in magnetic compressors.Principle of operation of the compressor is described. A two stage compression system is designed based on the new MPC topology. To understand the magnetic switch operation in great detail and to model the performance of magnetic switches, a Pspice model of the Magnetic Pulse Compression (MPC) system is designed. Circuit analysis of compressor and charging system accounting for nonlinear processes in magnetic switches is discussed.Simulation and experiment results illustrated that in order to realize the desired pulse, lus and ~200ns magnetization period would be required for MS1 and MS2, respectively. Two compression stages suffice to form 45kV, ~70ns pulses across a 207Ω resistive load.
