DEVELOPMENT OF A GENERATOR HEALTH-MONITORING AND PERFORMANCEENHANCEMENT SYSTEM
Because of lacking qualified technical people and poor skills in maintaining the generators, there are always intolerably low efficiency of generators and the frequent breakdown. These unsolved problems of generators are not only wasting valuable fuel, but also lowering the productivity. To response the problems, a cost effective generator health-monitoring and performance-enhancement system (GHPS) was developed. By using the collected data, the system can determine the current efficiency of the inspected generator whether it is working according to the manufacturer specifications or inefficiently due to fuel leaking, incorrect combustion process or other human induced errors. A number of virtual instruments have been designed so that the generator operators can set his preferred parameters for each kind of sensor in acquiring the operating signals of the inspected generator, monitoring the acquired signals in real-time, comparing the signals with normal case, estimating the deterioration rate and the severity of damage caused by any defective components of the inspected generator. Moreover, a rule-based fault diagnosis model has been designed and implemented for automatically performing fault detection and health assessment for generators. The operator can obtain advices from the fault diagnosis model and take appropriate maintenance actions. With helps from GHPS, the generators should become more efficient by wasting less fuel and more reliable by minimizing the chance of fatal breakdown.
