DAMAGE DETECTION OF UNDERWATER PIPELINE USING VIBRATION-BASED METHOD-NUMERICAL SIMULATION

Pipelines are essential structural systems for transportation of natural gases, crude oils, and other refined oil by-products across seabeds. However, pipelines lying directly on the seabed are highly susceptible to damage due to corrosive environment and the continuous action of waves. The consequences of pipeline failure would be severe both economically and environmentally. Therefore, continuous monitoring of pipeline conditions is very important. Since an underwater pipeline is usually covered by marine growth, visual based techniques can not easily detect damage in the structure. In the present work, vibration based method is studied for structural monitoring of sub sea pipelines. Because artificially exciting a pipeline underwater is very difficult, ambient excitation present in a marine environment will be used. The present paper presents a numerical investigation of a submarine pipeline to explore the feasibility of using ambient excitation and model updating method for pipeline monitoring. A finite element model of a pipeline in a natural environment was developed, which took into consideration the dynamic fluid-pipe-soil interaction. Various scenarios with different damage locations and severities on the pipe as well as the bedding conditions are assumed in the numerical simulations. The dynamic responses of the pipeline due to wave forces are calculated. The dynamic properties were extracted from the calculated response time histories and used to identify the pipeline conditions. The finite element model updating program is created and implemented by utilising the optimisation algorithm. Flexibility residual was used in objective function. The results demonstrate that the vibration measurement can detect the sub sea pipeline damage locations and severity.
