TOWARDS A SERVICE ONTOLOGY TO DRIVE REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLICINFRASTRUCTURE AND ASSETS

This paper describes several technological issues related to the development of a long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) system for the supertall Guangzhou New TV Tower (GNTVT) of 610 m high and presents preliminary analysis results of the monitoring data including those obtained during the recent typhoon and earthquake events. The GNTVT is being instrumented with a sophisticated SHM system consisting of more than 600 sensors by a consortium of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Sun Yat-Sen University. The SHM system for GNTVT has the following features: (i) it is designed to comprise six standard modules based on a modular design concept; (ii) it is designed to integrate both in-construction monitoring and in-service monitoring; and (iii) it is designed to perform a special function of verifying the effectiveness of vibration control devices to be installed on the structure. Sixteen types of sensors are being deployed to monitor three kinds of parameters: loading sources, structural responses, and environment effects. In addition to conventional sensors, a fibre optic sensing system based on fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) is being implemented for long-term real-time monitoring of dynamic strain and temperature. As a wireless data acquisition system has been operated to automatically and continuously acquire monitoring data, the SHM system has successfully detected the structural response of GNTVT during the recent Neoguri typhoon and Sichuan earthquake. Under the auspices of the Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structures Technology (ANCRiSST) and the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII), a benchmark problem of structural health monitoring for high-rise slender structures is being developed by employing the instrumented GNTVT as a host structure.
