BENCHMARKING ENGINEERING ASSET MANAGEMENT IN OIL REFINING
Petrochemical refineries comprise process plants containing large installed bases of engineering assets. Typically, a number of operating refineries are affiliated, owned or controlled by a multinational corporation, and it is not uncommon to find that benchmarking is applied to compare the operating refineries. The prevailing perception is that benchmarked comparisons of asset management between refineries leads to overall improvements in operational performance of the associated group of refineries, taking into consideration the political, economic, socio-cultural and technological conditions prevailing at the respective locations of the refineries. This paper examines to what extent such benchmarked comparisons lead to overall improvements in the management of engineering assets in refineries associated with a multinational corporation.
