TOGTHER WE INNOVATE: SOURCES OF INNOVATION FOR INTELLIGENT MAINTENANCE SYSTEMS AND ENGINEERING ASSET MANAGEMENT

Most companies, engineers, and scientist assume that innovation comes from a lone genius, or possibly a small team that suddenly generates a breakthrough idea. The truth is most innovations are created through innovation networks groups of people with common interest working together. Innovation is really about recombining ideas, knowledge from your network of people, with existing or past technologies in ways that sparks a breakthrough. Machinery vibration monitoring has been in practice since the 1950s, yet todays innovations are coming from ideas, people, and technologies from the semiconductor, distributed and parallel computing, communications, and enterprise data management industries. For instance, the advent of new Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) parallel computing capabilities and tightly coupled analog and digital I/O is driving new applications for machine and structural health monitoring and protection. In addition, the general trend in the computing industry to distribute processing is having an impact on machine vibration monitoring applications. Furthermore, new wired and wireless communications technologies enable local monitoring systems to communicate with plant wide or internet wide data storage and analysis systems. New technical data management innovations are now enabling machinery analysts to sort and organize data from a wide network of machinery. Overall, researchers and practitioners who wish to innovate need to develop important skills such as tracking technologies, developing an innovation network of people with a wide knowledge base, and bridging ideas from other industries. This paper describes some of the latest trends for machine monitoring and proposes a process to drive further innovation.
