Precautionary Saving Behavior of Urban Households: an Empirical Study of Micro Data

Starting from the inter-temporal utility maximization, deriving the theoretical model of optimal consumption, combining this with individual risk factors, using micro-data of related family investigation from the year 2002 to 2004 in city of Zhejiang province, this paper analyzes the precautionary saving behavior of urban households from the aspect of individuals idiosyncratic risks. The empirical results show that there are precautionary motives among urban households. The family features strongly affect consumption. Not only the demographic variables, but also the level of education and occupation of the head of the household will have influence on consumption decision. Different consumer groups may react differently to the individual risk, so the risks they faced differ accordingly, especially to the age, education level and occupation variables.
