Analysis of the Sustainability of Industrial Symbiosis: An Application of the Emergy Approach
As a subdiscipline of industrial ecology, industrial symbiosis (IS) is concerned with resource optimization among collocated companies. Economic and environmental motivation of IS is often referred to in contemporary literature. In spite of this, there has been no in-depth quantitative analysis enabling more comprehensive understanding of economic and environmental performances connected to IS. In this article a set of new emergy indices has been developed to assess the economic and environmental status by considering waste production and subsequent waste treatment and its recovery. With the application of new emergy indices, economic and environmental performances of 2 plants at different cases (without internal recycle and waste reuse/ with internal recycle/ industrial symbioses) have been quantified. It is concluded that IS, as viewed from a company perspective, has to be understood both in terms of individual economic and environmental performance, and as a more collective approach to industrial sustainability.
