NUMERICAL STUDY OF EFFECTS OF TIP CLEARANCE ON PERFORMANCE OF AN UNSHROUDED CENTRIFUGAL IMPELLER
Three-dimensional viscous internal flow was numerically studied for a centrifugal compressor impeller of high pressure ratio, high speed and low mass flow rate. Four different clearances were simulated under the design condition to study its effect on pressure ratio and efficiency of an unshrouded impeller with splitter blades. Meanwhile, the flow field inside the impeller was also studied in details. The numerical results showed there existed a low-speed wake flow near the blade exits and apparent reverse flow occurred at the clearances. The reverse flow brought up additional secondary flow loss. An increasing tip clearance would worsen the internal flow and overall performance of the impeller. The conclusions from this study could provide recommendations for designs of similar impellers.
