Mapping versus Modelling in System Dynamics

Qualitative and quantitative system dynamics tools have both been successfully applied in the area of dynamic decision making.Though these tools have been generally used in conjunction with each other, more recently, the use of qualitative tools alone has found support from some authors. This exclusion of the computer modelling phase has sparked a debate on the relative usefulness of qualitative tools versus quantitative tools. To date there has been little agreement on the issue. In the current study, a controlled experiment was conducted to test the effectiveness of both these types of system dynamics tools. Taken together, the findings suggest that qualitative tools are sufficient for simple tasks but contribute only to a limited extent in complex tasks. Further, quantitative tools are found to be a necessity to tackle more complex tasks.
