Slice data based support generation algorithm for fused deposition modeling

Purpose This paper aims to present a robust algorithm to generate support for fused deposition modeling (FDM).Design/methodology/approach Since lots of flaws appear in many STL models, the algorithm utilizes slice data as input. A top-down approach is designed to calculate the support slice layer by layer.The entire generation algorithm process including slice grouping, oriental bounding box (OBB) calculation, offsetting, and Boolean operation is presented in details. Several cases validate the efficiency and robustness of the procedure.Findings -The proposed algorithm successfully adds necessary supports not only for hanging surface but also for hanging vertexes and edges with O(n) time complexity, where n is the number of layers. It fully utilizes the parts self-support ability then decreases the support volume at maximum extent.Originality/value -Compared to STL based algorithm, this slice data based algorithm has the same efficiency but more notable stability, which significantly enhances the robustness of support generation process.
