A traffic flow model built upon system dynamics based microscopic driving behavior models
Traditional macroscopic traffic flow research mainly focused on behaviors of an overall stream of vehicles characterized by average vehicle speed and density. However, phenomena of time-in-queue delay and platoon dispersion are resulted from the aggregation of each single vehicle which is controlled by a driver in the traffic flow. This research first analyzed the feedback process of driving behavior for a single vehicle and accordingly developed a microscopic car-following model based on system dynamics (SD); then a macroscopic traffic flow model was developed by connecting the SD-based car-following models in series. Simulation results show the traffic flow model can explain and demonstrate various traffic phenomena such as the formation of traffic waves and platoon dispersion. And the microscopic car-following model can be utilized as a building block for future traffic flow related research.
