Characteristic of microstructure of 316L stainless steel parts formed via selective laser melting

To develop the selective laser melting (SLM) technology and enlarge its application domain, the mechanical properties controlled by inner microstructure of the SLM parts should be investigated initially.Therefore ,the characteristic of microstructure of 316L stainless steel parts formed via selective laser melting was mainly discussed in this work. Several combinations of parameters of SLM process, such as laser power, scan space and scan speed, were employed to investigate the variation of the microstructure of SLM specimens with the varying of these parameters using SEM and optical micrograph analysis. The results showed that there were several structure patterns varied regularly within a specimen formed by SLM; Compared with the normal microstructure ( general austenite ) of 316L stainless steel, the microstructure of the specimens formed by SLM was apparently different and showed a strong regional character owing to rapid non-balance solidification and repeatable heat flux variation during the process,and a micro-nanostructure was seen in a certain area whose temperature varied violently during the SLM process. There were obvious welding lines between the adjacent scan tracks; the microstructure within the areas close to the welding lines was different from that within the core area in a scan track. The microstructure recover to austenite after the specimen was heat treated at 550 ℃/1h.
