3D Symmetric Components Retrieve Based on Local Features Comparison in Mechanical Engineering

In mechanical domain, Radius Angle Histogram (RAH) is a useful method of retrieving 3D model. This method, however, uses the trigonometric function of the angle between surface normal and radius, which makes the components with inner and outer face usually undistinguishable. As a result, the retrieval precision is not acceptable. In this paper, improved Radius Angle Histogram method is proposed. This method directly employs the angle between surface normal and radius as the shape descriptor instead of trigonometric function of the angle between surface normal and radius. Before comparison, the models are normalized in the coordinates by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Then local features in each quadrant are extracted and are used to get local similarity. Last, the models with more local features similarity are considered to have more similarity and are returned as the retrieval results. An experiment is given. It is found that the proposed method has higher retrieval precision and lower time cost than that of RAH, especially for symmetric components. The proposed method is suitable for mechanical components design, especially in Rapid Prototyping domain.
