A preliminary research on three-dimensional reconstruction of functional fascicular groups inside a segment common peroneal nerve

Objective To explore the possibility of the three-dimensional reconstruction of short segmental common peroneal nerve functional fascicular groups , based on serial histological sections and computer technology. Methods 5cm common peroneal nerve was serial horizontally sliced with 0.25mm interval,using Acetycholinesterase (AChE) histochemical stain. 2D panorama images were acquired by high-resolution digital camera under 100× microscope and mosaic software. Different functional fascicular groups were distinguished and marked on each section .The topographic database was matched by image processing software. The 3D microstructure of the fascicular groups of a 5cm common peroneal nerve was reconstructed using Amira3.1 software. Result Reconstruction of nerve functional fasicular groups was realistic ,it could be rotated or zoomed in any direction. The intercross and recombination process of nerve bundles could be observed obviously. The functional anatomical discrimination of deep and superficial peroneal nerve inside common peroneal nerve of popliteal fossa was obvious. Conclusion Based on serial histological sections and computer technology, the 3D microstructure of short segmental peripheral nerve functional fascicular groups can be reconstructed satisfactorily. It provides the possibility for three-dimensional reconstruction of long segmental peripheral nerve functional fascicular groups .
