Recent Advances in NDE Technologies for Turbines and Generators
The increasing demand for power is putting tremendous stress on the existing power plants for generating electricity. The plans are being operated for longer periods of time under heavy load conditions. Reliability of key components of the power plant such as steam or gas turbines and generators is of prime importance. These components are inspected periodically during outages using non-destructive methods to detect and/or assess any service related damage.This paper discusses a variety of newly developed and enhanced NDE techniques for inspections of turbines and generators. These techniques provide means of assessment that are more reliable and can result in time savings. Additionally, these inspections provide information that can be used for lifetime assessment of components.
