Stock Management in the Presence of Perception Delays

In System Dynamics literature there are many studies on managing a stock in the presence of a supply line delay. If the supply line delay is ignored, the stock might oscillate. Furthermore, these oscillations might be unstable. A fast and stable behavior in the stock can be observed if the supply line delay is considered fully in the control decisions. However, all these studies implicitly assume that the stock under consideration is perceived instantaneously. What may happen if the stock can only be perceived after a long delay? If not considered accordingly, perception delays may also result in unstable oscillations, which is an expected behavior. In this paper, first the resulting oscillatory behavior in the presence of a perception delay,is demonstrated. Later, a proposed solution that considers the perception delay in the stock control decisions, is discussed. Resulting behavior is a significant improvement.
