DEVELOPING A GLOBAL BUILDING INVENTORY FOR EARTHQUAKE LOSS ASSESSMENT AND RISK MANAGEMENT
We discuss the development of a global database of building inventories for pre-earthquake risk analysis and for use in near-real-time post-earthquake loss estimation for the U.S. Geological Surveys Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) system. On a country-by-country level, the inventory contains estimates of building types categorized by material, lateral force-resisting system, use, and occupancy characteristics. The database draws on and harmonizes numerous sources: (1) UN statistics, (2) UN Habitat, (3)national housing censuses, (4) the World Housing Encyclopedia and (5) other pertinent literature.
