PREDICTABILITY OF PLASTIC PARTS BEHAVIOUR MADE FROM RAPID MANUFACTURING

Purpose: One of the most important issues to resolve in parts manufactured from Rapid Manufacturing technologies is to know their behavior working under real conditions. Total Quality Manufacturing (TQM) is only possible if mechanical and formal properties are well known in designing stages depending on processing parameters. The work is mainly focused on testing of several samples made under different parameters and technologies of SLS. This procedure, developed under design of experiment methodology, is the starting point to establish the pillars of designing for RM and standardization of RM testing Design/methodology/approach: Design of experiments and ANOVA analysis (analysis of variance) has been implemented in order to find the effects of several factors on mechanical and formal properties.The selected factors were: Layer thickness, laser power, location of the sample into the cabin, amount of recyclable material. The SLS technologies were 3Dsystem and EOS.Findings: Results have shown which factors have a high effect on the variables and the interaction between them. Optimum values of factors have been calculated in order to maximize mechanical properties and precision.Originality/values: The conclusions are very useful to develop rules for designing (designing for RM) and creating new standard rules (ISO, AISI, DIN, etc) for RM materials and parts testing. ANOVA analysis enables a better knowledge of factors behavior and to remove from the study those negligible parameters. Two different SLS technologies have been studied as factors in design of experiment.
