Sino-Dutch Waste Shipments Collaboration

Every year large quantities (+/- 10 million tons) of European waste is being shipped to China for recycling. An enormous part of this waste is shipped via Rotterdam, the main seaport of Europe. P.R. China and the Netherlands both ratified the Basel Convention on transboundary shipment of hazardous wastes to prevent that transshipment of waste causes environmental problems. Unfortunately there are companies that do not comply to this legislation for their own profit. This could effect environmental damage in the country of destination. Inspections have indicated that at least parts of the shipments never arrive at the place that was declared by the sender. The Ministry of Environmental Protection of China (MEP) and Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment of the Netherlands (VROM) will start collaboration to stop this illegal activities. The main activities of this project will be: -verification of destinations of waste shipments -training of involved government employees about about Chinese and European waste legislation -website for exporters with relevant legislation The ministers of MEP and VROM will sign an Memorandum of Understanding and a project agreement in this project.
