Disposal Countermeasure of Waste Drilling Fluids in Loess Region

A large quantity of waste drilling fluid and drainage is yielded during the exploit and exploration procedure of natural gas. These wastes may pollute soil, ground water and surface water because of surface leakage and overflow. The north of Shanxi province, which is the oil production area of the Changqing Oil Field, is chosen as study area. Analysis and study of waste drilling fluid is carried out in five different well sites of the study area. The results indicate that it is hard to achieve solid-liquid separation with physical method. Therefore, in order to achieve solid-liquid separation, destruction of colloidal structure must be carried out to make waste drilling fluid lose stability above all. Therefore, the study put forward the solidification-after-gelout disposal technique for waste drilling fluid. In the technique, Iron salts are chosen as gel breaker, fly ash, lime is chosen as curing agents and loess is chosen as supplementary materials. The optimum conditions are investigated and the results of experiment showed that when the content of FeCl3 is 0.6 percent, the content of fly-ash is 25 percent, the content of lime is 6 percent and the content of loess is 40 percent of waste drilling fluids. The result showed that it was effective to use the technique for treating the waste drilling fluid. After the treatment, the quality of leaching solution reaches the second grade of wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-1996).
