Key Lessons learned about WEEE Recycling from Japan and the EU
This paper describes collection and treatment systems for WEEE (waste electronic and electrical equipment) from the perspective of the sustainable use of electronics, considering how Japan and the EU have managed the recycling of consumer appliances and PCs/cellular phones, and hopes to provide information helpful for managing WEEE in developed countries. Our analysis will focus on: (1) the low WEEE collection rate, (2) the cost and the quality of recycling, and how cost and benefit are balanced, and (3) the tracing of recovered material and cross-border recycling. We can learn lessons useful in framing problems involving the generation, collection, treatment, and reuse of WEEE.
